DBKL issued 1,488 compounds to litterbugs in tourist spots

MORE than 1,000 compounds were issued by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to litterbugs last year.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh told the Dewan Rakyat yesterday that City Hall had issued a total of 1,488 compounds through 86 anti-littering operations carried out last year.

According to Yeoh, the DBKL operations were centred at strategic public and tourist hotspots such as Bukit Bintang, Jalan Ampang (in front of KLCC), around Dataran Merdeka, commercial areas in Kuala Lumpur, and locations frequently stained by betel nut spit.

“For now, both operations are organised with the physical presence of enforcement officers on the ground.

“The officers involved use handheld devices to issue compound notices, and the process does not involve any cash payments,” she said in a parliamentary written reply dated Jan 20.

Yeoh was responding to Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa (PH–Sekijang), who asked about the capability of digital monitoring infrastructure and enforcement integrity in ensuring the effectiveness of anti-littering and anti-spitting measures in Kuala Lumpur during Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

From Jan 1, anyone caught littering or spitting in public places will face fines of up to RM2,000, in addition to performing more than 12 hours of community service over six months.
