Respect me as Chair, retract your remarks, Deputy Speaker instructs backbencher

KUALA LUMPUR: Respect me as the Chair and retract when ordered to, Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Alice Lau instructed a government backbencher on Tuesday (Jan 20).

This comes after Khoo Poay Tiong (PH-Kota Melaka) drew flak from the Opposition bench when he questioned the whereabouts of fugitive businessman Datuk Seri Muhammad Adlan Berhan, who is the son-in-law of former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

While debating the royal address on Tuesday (Jan 20), Khoo claimed Muhyiddin’s recent overseas trip also included a stop over, and asked if they were related.

This drew flak from the Opposition bench who accused Khoo of making baseless accusations, resulting in demands for Khoo to retract his remarks.

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin stood up, saying that there has already been a ruling on this by the Dewan Rakyat speaker.

“Ask him to retract this so things will be resolved,” he said.

A 20-minute shouting match further ensued, with Khoo then saying he will retract the words “Pagoh’s son-in-law” and replace it with “Datuk Seri Muhammad Adlan Berhan”.

Khoo then drew even more ire from the House after he claimed that PAS MPs supported corruption.

A visibly fed-up Lau put her foot down and told Khoo; “Kota Melaka - respect me. Retract what you said about PAS and Pendang about supporting corruption” she said to cheers from the floor.

“Why is everyone still squabbling? Everybody please be silent,” she said.

Khoo retracted his statements and continued on with debates.
