Anwar: US Board of Peace needs to stop Zionist attacks first

KUALA LUMPUR: The formation of Gaza's "Board of Peace" by the US will do little to rebuild Palestine unless Zionist attacks are halted, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

While noting it is a step in the right direction to pressure Israel into stopping the attacks, it has yet to reach fruition.

Anwar said Malaysia is remaining cautious before showing support.

"This board has yet to clarify its objective. For me, we must firstly stop all attacks and then allow room for aid to be continuously channelled. The ceasefire has been signed yet the Israeli Zionist regime continues up till now," he said during Prime Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Jan 20).

Anwar said he has also instructed the Foreign Ministry to obtain the complete list of who sits on the board.

"Speculations are still abound. The upcoming Cabinet meeting will discuss this. I have also spoken with Arab leaders to get their views," he added.

Recently, US President Donald Trump announced that the Board of Peace would oversee the rebuilding and reconstruction of the devastated Gaza Strip.

A founding executive board has been formed to operationalise the initiative, with members including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, former UK Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair, Marc Rowan, Ajay Banga and Robert Gabriel.
