Tambunan hospital staff killed, colleague seriously hurt in Keningau crash

KENINGAU: A hospital staff member was killed while another was seriously injured in an accident involving two multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) on Jalan Dabata near a supermarket here on Saturday evening (Jan 17).

In the 4.30pm incident, the deceased, Simon Jibit, 48, a dental assistant at Tambunan Hospital, was confirmed dead at the scene after being thrown from the vehicle he was driving.

Another victim, Rina Maria P.P. Gundorong, 38, who was also employed at the same hospital, sustained serious injuries in the crash.

Keningau District Police chief, Supt Yampil Anak Garai, said the accident involved two MPVs.

“Initial investigations found that the MPV, driven by the female victim, had just exited the junction of a supermarket when it was hit by another MPV coming from the main road.

“As a result of the collision, the MPV driven by Rina Maria skidded onto the left shoulder of the road and crashed into another parked vehicle, causing the driver to suffer serious injuries,” he said when contacted by Sinar Harian on Sunday (Jan 18).

He said the other MPV overturned several times before the driver was thrown out of the vehicle and confirmed dead at the scene.

According to him, the seriously injured victim was sent to the hospital for further treatment, while the body of the deceased was handed over to the Forensic Division for a post-mortem examination.

“The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.
