“One day remanded and to be released today (Saturday, Jan 17), possibly by 5pm,” he said when contacted.

The arrest followed a sensitive question, alleged to contain racial elements, that was raised during a public lecture in Kuala Lumpur.

Rajsurian added that the case is being investigated by a team from Bukit Aman.

Meanwhile, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Comm Datuk M. Kumar confirmed the arrest of the 30-year-old around midnight.

"The police stress that strict action without compromise will be taken against any individuals who are believed to be instigating sedition and grief among the public.

"A full investigation will be conducted based on the laws available.

"People are also advised to always be prudent and responsible when making any statements or sharing any content in public spaces or on social media," he said in a statement on Saturday.

On Friday (Jan 16), media reports said Tan had resigned from FMT, a day after he apologised on Thursday (Jan 15) over the question he posed during the lecture, which sparked controversy.

The Malaysian Media Council later condemned the doxxing, harassment and intimidation of journalists following the backlash against Tan.
