Umno's steps to fortify itself will also mean a stronger BN, says Dr Wee

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA, a founding member of Barisan Nasional, is looking forward to the steps taken by Umno to strengthen itself internally, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The MCA president said these efforts would also translate to a stronger Barisan.

"We are ready to see what these measures are. This is the Barisan home, which provides shelter for all.

"We hope all this will bear fruit," the Ayer Hitam MP told reporters after attending the Umno Annual General Assembly here on Friday (Jan 16).

Asked if MCA would remain with Barisan, Dr Wee said the matter was never in question.

He highlighted that the coalition was formed in the spirit of the former Alliance Party, which was around prior to the nation achieving independence.

"We formed it together, and this (leaving) has never been an issue," he said.

Dr Wee said, however, that the views of Barisan’s component parties must also be taken into account when charting the way forward.

"Barisan is a big coalition and political realities must be considered amid its multiracial makeup.

"However, there are issues that we all agree on in unison, such as matters pertaining to the Urban Renewal Bill.

"Here, we can all stand together," he said.

He said MCA would also have to work hard ahead of the 16th General Election.

"I’m not saying it is around the corner, but we have to prepare ourselves," he said.
