No more 'safe seats', says Shafie on Kinabatangan, Lamag by-elections

Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal says there are no permanent political strongholds, as the party challenges UMNO’s long grip on Kinabatangan and Lamag.

KINABATANGAN: Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal says the Malaysian political landscape has changed and party strongholds no longer exist.

He said the Kinabatangan parliamentary and Lamag state seats were not longer Umno 'fixed deposits', adding some of its strongholds in the peninsula had fallen to other parties, including PAS.

"Kedah is gone, some in Johor are gone. Sabah is not exceptional," he said during a meet-and-greet programme with Warisan's candidates in Kampung Parisa here on Friday (Jan 16).

"They (voters) want representatives who make things happen, not just speak," he said.

He said Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman was chosen to contest Kinabatangan due to his experience and strong ties with the constituency.

In Lamag, Shafie said Warisan's candidate Mazliwati Abd Malek Chuawas is familiar with MA63 issues.

Barisan Nasional has held the Kinabatangan parliamentary seat for over two decades, most recently by the late Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, who served as MP for six consecutive terms from 1999 till his death on Dec 5.

Polling day is on Jan 24.

Barisan is fielding Bung Moktar's son, Naim Kurniawan Moktar in Kinabatangan and Mohd Ismail Ayob in Lamag.
