MACC to meet Mindef leaders next Wednesday

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is expected to have discussions with the Defence Ministry next week, says its chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.

He said the meeting, scheduled to take place on Jan 21, will be part of efforts to strengthen governance and improvements in procurement processes.

It is also to address corruption related to military procurement, he added.

“I will meet minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and the ministry secretary-general next Wednesday.

“The meeting is aimed at fostering cooperation and enhancing integrity, governance and transparency,” he told a press conference.

Azam said discussions would also focus on the way forward to “clean up” the Armed Forces, with the MACC ready to assist based on findings from its investigations, information gathered, as well as data from previous probes.

“We are ready to help the ministry rectify existing weaknesses,” he said.

The Defence Ministry had recently announced sweeping overhaul of its anti-corruption plan to curb misconduct and abuse of power.

Mohamed Khaled said Malaysians can expect reforms within the ministry, particularly involving the Armed Forces, as part of a comprehensive effort to rebuild public trust in the military.
