'No oil here!': US Embassy post draws humour from Malaysians

PETALING JAYA: A post by The United States Embassy in Kuala Lumpur led to joking quips and comments by Malaysians who made it clear the country "has no oil" for the Americans.

The post by the embassy showed a 2016 photo of the country taken from the International Space Station.

"Those bright pops of white aren’t city lights—they’re massive lightning strikes firing off inside a thunderstorm system.

"It’s easy to forget we live on a living, breathing planet until you see it from this angle.

"Whether you’re under the storm or above it, the view is spectacular," it said in a good-natured post on Jan 9.

However, Malaysians were quick to jokingly point out that the country did not have anything of "worth" for the superpower nation.

User Mohd Raffi Merusin jested on the recent issue between America and Greenland.

"Just to clarify, Malaysia has Redland, not Greenland. No crude oil here—just an abundance of palm oil and thunderstorms," the comment said.

Fakhri Kamarudin quipped that the country only had cooking oil.

"Please tell your president we don't have oil... we only have Saji cooking oil," the user wrote.

Another by the name of Sayyid Hadi Samsudim wrote "I don't see any oil," while Norhikmal Crixalis added "FYI, our oil is only baby oil.".

User Woei Long Drex Chan chimed in with "We don't have cities. We all live in the trees."

Many also noted the Malaysian commentators' sense of humour.
