25-year-old engineer drowns while bathing in Gohtong Jaya river

HULU SELANGOR: A 25-year-old man drowned while bathing in Sungai Kedondong, Gohtong Jaya on Sunday (Jan 11).

Hulu Selangor OCPD Supt Ibrahim Husin said the incident was reported to the district police headquarters control centre at about 4pm after a member of the public contacted the MERS999 emergency line to report that a man had drowned while swimming in the river.

"A total of five personnel from the Gohtong Jaya police station, 10 firemen and three Civil Defence Force personnel were deployed to the scene," he said in a statement on Monday (Jan 12).

The victim was retrieved from the river at about 5pm and was pronounced dead by medical personnel, he said.

"Initial police investigations found that the victim worked as an engineer at a private company in Petaling Jaya.

"He is believed to have drowned while bathing in the river, which was about 3m deep," he added.

A post-mortem will be conducted at Kuala Kubu Bharu Hospital at 8am on Monday, Supt Ibrahim said.

"The case has been classified as a sudden death.

"We advise the public to remain cautious and prioritise personal safety when carrying out recreational activities at rivers with family or friends to prevent unwanted incidents," he said.
