KUALA LUMPUR: A new record was set by the Cardiology Department at Hospital Sultan Idris Shah (HSIS) in Serdang after treating 76 patients in a single day, covering 17 hours of intensive operations.

The record included cardiologists performing 48 stent procedures, said HSIS Cardiology Department head Datuk Dr Asri Ranga Abdullah Ramaiah.

He said that the hospital usually manages between 50 and 70 cardiology cases daily, making the current 76-patient figure one of the highest ever recorded.

“We set a record for Percutaneous Coronary Interventions (PCIs) at Hospital Serdang yesterday, with 48 PCIs performed in a single day, the highest in the past 20 years.

“Thankfully, no patients lost their lives; however, several emergency heart attack cases were critical, including one patient who needed CPR before undergoing stenting.

“All patients survived,” Dr Asri told Bernama.

He said the hospital’s ability to handle such a high volume of cases was due to its seven angiogram machines, which are used to detect blockages in the heart.

Dr Asri attributed the dedication of the nearly 100 doctors, nurses, medical assistants, radiographers and support staff who had worked tirelessly from 8am on Friday until 1am on Saturday to accomplish this remarkable feat.
