Kinabatangan, Lamag by-elections: EC expects voter turnout to be around 65%

KINABATANGAN: Voter turnout for the Kinabatangan parliamentary and Lamag state by-elections on Jan 24 is expected to be around 65%, based on recent election trends, says Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun.

The Election Commission chairman said three candidates were successfully nominated for the Kinabatangan parliamentary seat, while two were nominated for the Lamag state seat.

Speaking to reporters after the nomination proceedings at Dewan Sri Lamag here Saturday (Jan 10), Ramlan said the process had proceeded smoothly, calmly and in an orderly manner.

“All parties, including candidates, political parties and supporters, demonstrated a high level of discipline. The entire process was peaceful and well-managed,” he said.

Ramlan also expressed appreciation to all parties involved in the nomination process, particularly the returning officers and their teams, for ensuring the proceedings ran without incident.

He called on voters to come out in large numbers to cast their ballots on polling day, adding that the commission remained confident the by-elections would continue to proceed peacefully throughout the campaign period.

During the last Sabah election on Nov 29, Sabah recorded a 64.25% voter turnout, including regular voters, postal voters, and early voters.
