Floods: Over 400 evacuated in Sarawak

KUCHING: Over 400 flood victims have been moved to temporary relief centres after heavy rain overnight in parts of Sarawak.

The state disaster management committee said 157 people were taken to Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Bijuray Mongag, Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Blimbin Krokong and Dewan Kampung Jeriah in Bau district.

In Siburan district, 235 people were moved to Balai Raya Kampung Betong Kanowit, St Peter Simpok, Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Lintang Baru, SK Tanah Merah and Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Kerumboi.

Also in Siburan, Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department personnel evacuated 130 flood victims to Dewan Taman Duranda Emas at 12.45am on Friday (Jan 9).

In Samarahan district, nine people were evacuated to SK Endap at 2.20am on Friday, while the number of evacuees at the newly opened relief centre at the Kota Samarahan Civic Centre and Dewan Mesra Simunjan was still being finalised as at 10am Friday.

Another relief centre was activated at 9.30am Friday at Dewan Kampung Jeriah in Sibu, where six people from one household are seeking shelter.

In Subis district in northern Sarawak, there are still 72 evacuees at Dewan Serbaguna SMK Bekenu, which was opened on Jan 4.

As at 11am Friday, the number of flood victims statewide stood at 473 in 13 relief centres in six districts.
