Lahad Datu man gets 25 years' jail, 10 lashes for raping niece


KOTA KINABALU: A man has been sentenced to 25 years' jail and 10 strokes of the cane after he was found guilty of raping his teenage niece in Lahad Datu.

Lahad Datu Sessions Court Judge Suhailla Selag delivered the verdict on the 41-year-old after the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Based on the charge, the man allegedly raped his 15-year-old niece at a house in Kunak district at around 3am in December 2020.

The prosecution, led by Raya Ng Juhn Tao had brought in eight witnesses to testify while the defence team saw five witnesses testifying throughout the trial that started on Aug 20, 2024.

Defence counsel Abdul Gani Zelika and Mohd Ridwan Usman applied for leave to file for appeal at the High Court, which the Sessions Court granted.
