Health Minister outlines plan to ban open vape systems first

PUTRAJAYA: The highly discussed vape ban in Malaysia is "almost here" and will initially focus on banning open systems, says Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.

An open-system vape can be refilled with any e-liquid, while the more common closed-system vape uses pods.

Dzulkefly said the ban will be done in stages.

“We face challenges, but we still hope to implement the ban. Many compounding factors are at play. But, our team of experts is here to work on it,” he said in his speech when delivering his New Year’s address to ministry staff here on Tuesday (Jan 6).

Speaking to reporters later, the Health Minister said: “We will start with the open system before looking into other products.”

Reports indicate that the ban is expected to be implemented in mid-2026.
