Sky-high record for Sarawak

Sarawak announced the Guinness World Record for Longest GPS Journey by Drone Relay during the Countdown 2026 celebration at Kuching Waterfront on New Year’s Eve.

SARAWAK welcomed the new year on a high note with the announcement of a Guinness World Record for a magical drone journey covering major landmarks across the state.

The Gateway to Sarawak drone relay project covered every corner of the state, from the westernmost tip at Tanjung Datu to the northern border with Sabah, showcasing Sarawak’s diverse landscapes and rich culture in one sweep.

It aims to inspire curiosity and share Sarawak’s distinctive heritage and innovation with a global audience.

The Gateway to Sarawak initiative achieved the Guinness World Record for the Longest GPS Journey by Drone Relay, which was unveiled during the Countdown 2026 celebration at Kuching Waterfront on New Year’s Eve.

The official announcement positioned Sarawak firmly on the global stage as it prepares to welcome visitors in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026.

“This achievement goes beyond setting a world record. It reflects Sarawak’s readiness to lead with bold ideas, innovation and confidence as we step into 2026,” said state Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“Announcing the Guinness World Record on New Year’s Eve is a strong signal of the momentum Sarawak is building as we prepare to welcome global travellers,” he added.

Recognised worldwide as the definitive authority on record-breaking achievements, Guinness World Records provides independent verification and global credibility to milestones achieved across countries, industries and cultures.

The record-setting drone journey reflects Sarawak’s scale, connectivity and ambition as the Gateway to Borneo.

Its unveiling was a highlight at Countdown 2026, which was attended by Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.

The celebration kicked off with performances by Sarawakian singers Gabriel Mawat, Ng Chien Chien, Meera Zada, Carrie Geres, Razali Sa’at and Jolly Jengan.

They were followed on the stage by Malaysian artists KRU, Dayang Nurfaizah, Jatt Ali and Naqiu.

The countdown culminated with a display of musical fireworks at midnight, after which Indonesian star Judika closed the night with a rousing rendition of hits.
