Flood situation in Sarawak shows improvement as evacuation centres close

SIBU: The flood situation in the state is improving, with three of the 11 temporary evacuation centres closed, reducing the number of evacuees from 1,347 to 943.

According to Sarawak Civil Defence Force Director Mohtar Samat, assessments indicate that further centre closures are expected.

“With the closure of three centres yesterday (Jan 3) and no new centres opening, the number of victims in centres has decreased from 1,347 to 943, and the number of Heads of Household has decreased from 303 to 243,” he said on Sunday (Jan 4).

Despite initial resistance among some residents to evacuate due to concerns about their property and health, ongoing support from agencies ensured that all were safely relocated.

Health monitoring at the centres has shown only mild cases of fever, cough and flu, with no severe illnesses reported.

Mohtar urged residents in at-risk areas to stay updated on weather conditions, which are available on various media platforms, following warnings from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia).
