PONTIAN: DAP leaders should stop offending Umno members, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan.
The Umno supreme council member said the party has become a key factor straining relations within the unity government.
“The issue affecting Umno's relationship in the unity government is DAP.
“Our party members are often triggered by statements or actions from certain DAP leaders,” he told a press conference at the open hall of Kampung Parit Dato Onn Api Api here on Saturday (Jan 3).
Ahmad also urged DAP leaders at all levels to be more mindful of Umno members’ sentiments, saying that insensitive remarks could further strain ties between the parties.
Meanwhile, responding to questions on proposals for Umno and PAS to cooperate, he said any major decision involving Umno must go through the party’s highest platforms.
“The matter must be brought to the Umno supreme council meeting and the Umno general assembly is scheduled to take place this month.
“Discussions on such proposals must first be deliberated by the supreme council, followed by the party’s delegates during the annual general assembly. No unilateral decision can be made outside these structures,” he stressed.
Ahmad, who previously served as Umno information chief and secretary-general, said the party’s direction, whether to maintain its current course or explore other political alignments, would ultimately depend on internal deliberations and feedback from its leadership and grassroots.
However, he added that any outcome regarding Umno’s political direction would only be known after discussions at the supreme council meeting and the party’s general assembly.
Earlier, Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan said that genuine unity in the national political landscape could only be achieved if Umno, Bersatu and PAS were brought together in a single alliance on Jan 2.
He described Umno Youth’s move to organise a special convention as a bold step, adding that many Umno supporters were in fact uncomfortable being part of a government headed by Pakatan Harapan.
