PETALING JAYA: The first passenger train sets for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) have arrived in Malaysia, marking a major milestone for the 665km rail project as it moves closer to the testing and commissioning phase.

The blue-and-white electric multiple unit (EMU) train cars were delivered to Kuantan Port City before the end of 2025.

The coaches were then transported by trailer and lifted onto tracks at the ECRL station area in Gebeng, Kuantan.

According to sources familiar with the project, plans are underway for an official media event to formally unveil the ECRL passenger train sets ahead of the Chinese New Year period.

The arrival of the trains would support upcoming system integration, testing and commissioning works.

Featuring traditional batik and wau motifs along the carriage exterior, the six-car EMU sets are designed to carry up to 430 passengers per trip.

The trains are equipped with modern passenger facilities, including designated wheelchair areas, to improve comfort and accessibility for commuters.

The ECRL project, which links Kota Baru in Kelantan to Gombak in Selangor under Phase One, is scheduled for completion by December this year, with passenger operations expected to begin in January 2027.

Phase Two, extending the line from Gombak to Port Klang in Selangor, is targeted for completion by December 2027.

Once operational, the ECRL is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between the east coast states and the Klang Valley, cutting travel times and supporting economic growth along the east-west corridor.

Passenger trains on the network are designed to operate at speeds of up to 160kph.

The project is one of the country’s largest infrastructure undertakings, with overall completion nearing the final stages ahead of full system testing next year.
