Graduates from Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia’s (NUMed) Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme continue to demonstrate their preparedness for international medical careers. Some 66.7% of NUMed graduates have secured UK Foundation Programme placements across 12 National Health Service (NHS) regions, despite an increasingly competitive UK postgraduate medical training environment.
This achievement highlights the strength of NUMed’s medical education and the ability of its graduates to compete successfully for postgraduate training opportunities in a changing global healthcare landscape.
Newcastle University regional provost and group chief executive officer (East and South-East Asia) Prof Dennis Wong said, “The fact that the majority of our MBBS graduates secured UK Foundation Programme placements is a particularly encouraging outcome.”
More importantly, he emphasised that the UK Foundation Programme represents only one pathway among many for aspiring doctors.
“Our MBBS programme does not aim to prepare students for a single destination, but equips students with the knowledge, clinical competence and professional attributes to succeed internationally.”
The success of NUMed graduates reflects the quality, rigour and international recognition of the medical education they receive. Its MBBS programme is dually accredited by the UK General Medical Council (GMC) and the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC), ensuring it meets the standards required by both regulators. Students follow the same curriculum, learning outcomes and assessment standards as their peers at Newcastle University, UK, graduating with the same degree.
Students also benefit from opportunities for international exposure throughout their studies. Those who are eligible may undertake a study exchange at the UK campus during Year 2, while summer electives provide further opportunities to gain clinical exposure, experience different healthcare systems, and build international networks.
“Having the opportunity to study and complete some clinical placements in the UK gave me a better understanding of the healthcare system, patient population and NHS work environment,” said Solomon Khit Jun Wei (Class of 2026), who was placed at James Cook University Hospital, UK.
Besides, through an integrated case-led curriculum, students develop clinical reasoning by applying scientific knowledge to real patient scenarios, helping them think like doctors from day one. As they progress, clinical placements across hospitals and community healthcare settings provide experience across a broad range of specialities. The programme also emphasises professional skills including teamwork, leadership, communication, ethical practice, and lifelong learning.
“Beyond academics, I benefited greatly from extracurricular activities organised by student societies, such as revision sessions, clinical skills workshops, mock Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) and career talks,” said Edwin Fong Zhong Yi (Class of 2026), who is currently at Yeovil District Hospital, UK.
“Ultimately, parents and students can be reassured that a UK medical education at NUMed remains internationally respected, rigorously regulated and focused on producing doctors who are equipped to contribute to healthcare systems wherever their careers take them,” Prof Wong added.
