Out with the old, and in with the new in Sabah

Cool beginnings: Many Sabahans start the new year with a river bath to wash away bad luck.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabahans have their unique traditions and gatherings to mark the New Year, with events such as river bathing, mandi bunga (flower baths) and barbecues.

Sunita Rahman and her 11 siblings, parents and in-laws from interior Paitan decided to hold the buang sial (cleansing of bad luck) river bathing session early, due to the prevailing bad weather.

“We went to Kibunut deep in Penampang for our year-end gathering to usher in the New Year in our own special way,” said the 31-year-old who lives with her husband in Penampang.

She said they also included the birthdays of siblings Natalinah, 19, and Roni Rahman, 25, in December, with the ritual.

Sunita said she felt blessed to have such a closely knit family.

“Even though we have disagreements at times, we make sure to forgive, forget and move on,” she added.

Homemaker Adriana Mijoh said her family was keeping the celebrations simple this year, with the usual flower bath at the stroke of midnight.

“I bought seven types of flowers normally used to improve mood, reduce stress, infuse scents and to bring positive vibes. The blooms included carnations and sunflowers,” said the 60-year-old who lives in Penampang.

“At this stage of my life, I no longer want to host big parties as I get tired easily,” she said, adding that her four children were grown and had their own New Year programmes planned.

Administrative officer Albianie Alim said she and her family’s New Year gathering was small but meaningful, adding that being with her children, parents and siblings was most important.

“We just had a simple dinner and spent time just chatting. For me, as long as I’m with my loved ones, it is more than enough.

“Besides, we had an earlier Christmas and New Year event, so all is well,” added the 40-year-old.
