378 summonses issued, 90 motorcycles seized in KL New Year traffic ops

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 378 summonses were issued and 90 motorcycles seized following a New Year's Day traffic operation.

Conducted by the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), some 800 motorcycles were inspected.

KL JSPT chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the motorcycle riders inspected were aged between 15 and 19.

Among the main offences detected were riding without a valid licence, expired road tax and illegal vehicle modifications.

"We also detected motorcycles that had been illegally modified, including the use of exhaust systems not in accordance with specifications. All the motorcycles involved were seized, and 90 will not be allowed to be taken home.

“We also found motorcycles without functioning brakes, but brake failure should not be used as a justification,” he told reporters at the scene following the operation early Thursday morning.

The operation involved eight officers and 80 JSPT personnel, he added.

ACP Mohd Zamzuri said no untoward incidents occurred during the operation, although several riders attempted to flee.

"There were no incidents. There were attempts to escape, but our team intercepted them.

"We urge parents to closely monitor their children’s activities to prevent them from getting involved in offences that violate the law," he said.
