PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across four states as well as the Federal Territories of Putrajaya and Labuan, effective until 4pm on Wednesday (Dec 31).

MetMalaysia, in a statement on Facebook, said the severe weather is expected to affect multiple areas in Selangor, including Klang, Petaling, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat and Sepang.

A similar warning has also been issued for parts of Negeri Sembilan (Jelebu, Seremban, Port Dickson, Kuala Pilah and Rembau).

In Sarawak, the affected areas include Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah (Tanjung Manis, Matu, Dalat and Mukah) and Bintulu.

In Sabah, the warning covers the entire Pedalaman and Pantai Barat regions as well as parts of Kudat (Kota Marudu and Kudat).

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
