KUCHING: Sarawak recorded significant socio-economic progress throughout 2025 under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030, Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said in his New Year 2026 message.
"For the whole of 2025, we saw the state continue to achieve tangible improvements that brought prosperity and a better quality of life to the people, particularly in infrastructure, digital transformation and human capital development," he said.
Abang Johari noted that more than 1,000km of new and upgraded roads had been completed across Sarawak, with major sections of the Pan Borneo Highway now fully open. These improvements have boosted road safety, reduced travel times and opened up economic opportunities in both urban and rural areas.
Access to clean water, electricity and internet connectivity has also expanded, raising living standards. The premier highlighted Sarawak’s digital transformation, including the establishment of world-class data centres, the adoption of artificial intelligence and cloud technologies, and more efficient e-government systems.
Human capital development remained a core focus, with ongoing investments in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), scholarships and education assistance. The Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme, starting in 2026, aims to ensure more Sarawakians can pursue higher education without financial barriers.
To address rising living costs, the Sarawak Government will continue the Sarawak Basic Needs Contribution (SKAS), with an increased allocation of RM640 million in 2026 to support household well-being.
Abang Johari reaffirmed Sarawak’s commitment to environmental sustainability, including forest, river and biodiversity preservation, as well as the expansion of clean and renewable energy to safeguard future generations.
He stressed that unity among Sarawakians remains the state’s greatest strength, saying that while development can be driven by technology and capital, true progress is built on harmony and cooperation.
Looking ahead, Abang Johari said 2026 marks an important phase in Sarawak’s journey to becoming a developed region by 2030, with an emphasis on a high-impact economy and future-ready infrastructure. The launch of AirBorneo operations in 2026 is expected to enhance air connectivity, tourism, trade and mobility for Sarawakians.
He expressed appreciation to all levels of leadership and the people of Sarawak for their cooperation in 2025, and called on all Sarawakians to continue preserving harmony and unity as the state pursues new opportunities and development together in 2026.
