Public office is a trust to be honoured, says Loke in New Year message

PETALING JAYA: In his New Year greetings, Transport Minister Anthony Loke emphasised that public office is a trust that must be upheld and honoured every day.

“As we step into the New Year, I believe many of us hope that our lives will be better than they were in the year before. The New Year is not merely about closing an old chapter, but an opportunity for us to reflect on the direction of our own lives and of the nation,” Loke said in his New Year message on Wednesday (Dec 31).

He stressed the need for a more responsible form of politics in Malaysia, one that focuses on solving problems rather than creating divisions for narrow self-interest. “Malaysia cannot afford returning to old practices that eroded public trust and hindered the country’s progress,” he said.

Loke acknowledged that many Malaysians continue to struggle with the rising cost of living, while the business community is dealing with higher operational costs. He assured that the government is committed to easing these burdens through effective and practical policies.

“As members of the Federal Government, our responsibility is clear: to serve with honesty, to make decisions in the public interest, and to ensure that economic growth translates into real well-being for the people and a sustainable business environment,” he added.

Loke expressed hope that 2026 will bring renewed hope and confidence in the country’s ongoing efforts to build a better Malaysia together.
