KUALA LUMPUR: PAS has offered to take the helm of Perikatan Nasional following Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation as coalition chairman.
PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (pic) called on all parties to reflect and take stock of what happened in Perlis and to take measures to further strengthen the people’s trust and confidence in Perikatan.
“PAS hereby offers its willingness to lead Perikatan, to strengthen, organise and prepare for the state elections and the 16th General Election,” he said in a statement.
PAS’ statement came following Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin’s announcement that he is stepping down as Perikatan chairman.
His resignation will take effect tomorrow. The former prime minister will remain as Bersatu president.
PAS is a component member of Perikatan, along with Gerakan and Malaysian Indian People’s Party.
On another matter, Takiyuddin said PAS has decided not to take up any positions in the Perlis executive council line-up, to be formed by the new mentri besar.
“All exco members from the party will relinquish their position as a sign of solidarity with the former mentri besar (from PAS) who had resigned.
“The party is committed to ensure continuity and its presence in the Perlis government, in line with the mandate given by the people in the 15th General Election,” he said.
He also reiterated the party’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, democratic principles, the constitutional monarchy, and the guidance of the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, for the benefit of the state and the people.
Last week, eight Perlis assemblymen – three from PAS and five from Bersatu had signed a statutory declaration, withdrawing their support from then Mentri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli.
On Dec 25, the 63-year-old Mohd Shukri stepped down from his post, citing health reasons.
Abu Bakar Hamzah, the Kuala Perlis assemblyman from Bersatu was sworn in on Dec 28 as the new mentri besar.
