Gig Workers Act officially gazetted, ministry says marks new chapter in labour reform

PETALING JAYA: The gazetting of the Gig Workers Act 2025 on Wednesday (Dec 31) marks a new chapter in labour reform for Malaysia, says the Human Resources Ministry.

In a statement Wednesday, the ministry said the act had earlier received Royal Assent on Dec 16.

"The gazetting of the act is a significant step in the Government's ongoing efforts to strengthen the national labour legal framework, specifically in regulating the growing gig work ecosystem and providing a more comprehensive and systematic foundation of protection for gig workers in Malaysia," the ministry said.

However, the ministry also said that in line with legal procedure, the Act would only come into force on a date approved by the authorised Minister and stated in the finalised gazette.

"Therefore, all provisions under this Act cannot be enforced until the effective date is officially announced," the statement said.

It added that the ministry would continue preparations for the Act's implementation, including developing subsidiary regulations, coordinating governance mechanisms, and holding engagement sessions with stakeholders to ensure orderly and effective implementation aligned with the gig work ecosystem's realities and needs.

Further announcements regarding the Gig Workers Act 2025's effective date will be provided periodically through the ministry's official channels.
