KUALA LUMPUR: A local man and a woman were detained in connection with a video showing an individual wearing a headscarf while consuming alcohol.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Comm Datuk M. Kumar said the duo, aged 22 and 24, were arrested at about 4.30pm on Wednesday (Dec 24) in Subang Jaya to assist in investigations.
"Initial investigations found that the individual seen wearing a headscarf and consuming alcohol in the video was a man," he said in a statement on Wednesday.
Investigations are being conducted by the Special Investigation Unit under the CID Prosecution/Legal Division (D5), he added.
"The case is being investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code, which relates to acts that may cause disharmony, disunity or hostility on religious grounds, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities or services.
"Under Section 298A of the Penal Code, an offence that creates religious disharmony or threatens unity carries a jail term of between two and five years upon conviction.
"Meanwhile, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act provides for a fine of up to RM500,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, or both, if found guilty," he said.
Comm Kumar stressed that firm and uncompromising action would be taken against any individual who deliberately disregards religious sensitivities and creates a non-harmonious environment.
"We urge the public to be responsible and prudent social media users, and to refrain from making statements or sharing content that could undermine harmony and unity, particularly issues involving religion, race and royalty (3R), he said.
