Young adults lost RM715mil to telecommunication crime this year


PETALING JAYA: Individuals aged 21 to 30 emerged as the largest group of victims of telecommunication crimes from January to November this year, with 8,789 cases reported.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) reported a total of 28,698 telecommunication crime cases were recorded, with losses amounting to RM715mil.

“Based on age group analysis, those aged 21 to 30 recorded the highest number of victims with 8,789 cases.

"This was followed by the 31 to 40 age group with 6,825 victims, and the 41 to 50 age group with 4,977 cases," the department said in a statement on its official Facebook page.

Meanwhile, individuals aged 51 to 60 accounted for 3,382 cases, while those over 60 recorded 2,763 cases.

The department also noted that young people aged 15 to 20 were not spared, with 1,962 cases recorded during the same period.

“This situation proves that telecommunication crimes affect all age groups,” CCID added, advising the public to remain vigilant and not easily fall for scams.
