Four vehicles go up in flames at Bukit Mertajam food court


BUKIT MERTAJAM: Four cars parked near a food court in Jalan Song Ban Kheng here caught fire on Monday (Dec 22) afternoon, with two gutted and two others damaged.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director John Sagun Francis said six firefighters from the Perda Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 2.27pm Monday.

"The fire involved four vehicles, a multi-purpose vehicle and a luxury sports utility vehicle, both about 95% gutted, while two sedans sustained 30% and 15% damage, respectively," he said in a statement Monday.

John said the operations commander conducted an initial assessment before fire control and extinguishing works were carried out with assistance from the Padang Lalang, Cross Street and Berapit volunteer fire brigades.

The fire was brought under control at 3.04pm, after which the site was handed over to the Fire Investigation Team for further action.

The cause of the fire and the total losses are still under investigation. - Bernama
