Elderly man injured after crane topples onto nursing home

BUKIT MERTAJAM: An 84-year-old man suffered head injuries after a crane toppled onto the roof of an elderly care home in Permatang Tinggi here on Saturday (Oct 10).

The incident occurred at Pusat Jagaan Rumah Sejahtera Permatang Tinggi, which housed 49 people, including 38 residents and 11 workers.

The Penang Fire and Rescue Department said the crane was believed to have overturned after losing stability while being parked on uneven ground.

It subsequently crashed onto the roof of the building housing elderly residents.

Health Ministry personnel took the injured resident, identified as Chin Ah Leak, also known as Tan Seow Kheng, to hospital before firefighters arrived.

The department said the remaining 37 residents and 11 workers, including the crane operator, were unharmed.

Firefighters from the Bukit Mertajam station received an emergency call at 12.38pm and arrived at the scene at 1.02pm after encountering traffic congestion.

A five-member team, led by operations commander Mohd Azmi Zakaria, inspected the surrounding area to ensure it was safe.

Barriers were also erected to prevent members of the public from entering the restricted area.

The situation was brought under control at 1.15pm, and the operation ended at 1.45pm.

Police and Health Ministry personnel also assisted at the scene.
