Sabah to work closely with Motac

KOTA KINABALU: Illegal tour guides, infrastructure, tourists’ safety and standard operating procedures for tour-related activities will be among the key focus on the industry.

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said stricter attention must be given to these issues, which also include tour activities such as scuba diving and water sports.

He said these matters were raised during a recent meeting with Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister (Motac) Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

“The meeting aimed to address issues and discuss strategic plans for developing Sabah’s tourism sector,” he said yesterday.

Jafry said licensing and permits involving illegal tour operators and guides, abuse of licences and unclear status of hotels and resorts were also discussed.

Other concerns highlighted included matters that have a direct impact on the safety, welfare and overall experience of both domestic and international visitors to the state.

He said enforcement efforts would also focus on activities such as water sports and boat operations from illegal or unregistered jetties, abuse of social visit passes, operations in prohibited areas, the illegal collection of island entry fees and other unauthorised activities.

He said Motac was willing to work with the state government on stronger law enforcement, better coordination of licensing matters, information sharing and strategic promotional initiatives to boost Sabah tourism.

“I am sure with systematic coordination and focused collaboration between our ministry and Motac, we will be able to give a significant positive impact on the management of tourism in the state,” he said.

He added that sustained efforts were needed to ensure the sector grows in a more sustainable, safe and competitive manner.

He also stressed the importance of close cooperation with the Federal Government, particularly in strengthening regulations, addressing ongoing issues and enhancing Sabah’s reputation as a high-quality, internationally recognised tourism destination.
