Religious teacher nabbed over alleged sexual assault


KUALA LUMPUR: A 40-year-old male religious teacher has been detained in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a student.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said the suspect was detained on Friday (Dec 19).

"He has been remanded until Thursday (Dec 25).

"He has been teaching at the religious school in Kampung Pandan for about 11 years," he said when contacted on Saturday (Dec 20).

It was previously reported that an 11-year-old student was allegedly sexually assaulted by a religious teacher, leading the police to start a probe into the matter.

Wangsa Maju OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Lazim Ismail had said that the incident was reported to the police on Dec 16.

In the report, it was alleged that the suspect had sexually assaulted a student from a religious school based in Kampung Pandan.

A police investigation has been opened under Section 14(d) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
