KUALA LUMPUR: The announcement that the Lindung 24/7 Scheme, which provides round-the-clock social security coverage, will be rolled out by the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) in the first or second quarter of next year, is welcomed.
Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the initiative marks a major and progressive reform in Malaysia’s social security framework.
He described the scheme as a significant step forward in strengthening worker protection and building a more caring and inclusive society, noting that it recognises the reality that workers continue to face risks beyond their working hours.
“For decades, PERKESO has provided critical protection against work-related injuries and illnesses. This new scheme represents an important evolution by extending protection around the clock, including during commuting, personal activities and daily routines,” he said when contacted on Saturday (Dec 20).
He added that the scheme would offer greater peace of mind to millions of workers and their families nationwide.
Lee said the initiative is especially timely in light of rising road accidents, lifestyle-related risks and increasingly blurred boundaries between work and personal life.
He also noted that the scheme aligns with modern employment patterns such as flexible work arrangements and the gig economy, where risks are no longer confined to fixed working hours.
Commending the Human Resources Ministry and PERKESO for their foresight and leadership, Lee stressed the importance of prioritising public awareness, clear guidelines and efficient claims processes as the implementation date approaches.
“The scheme is not merely an expansion of coverage, but a strong statement that social security must keep pace with the realities of modern life,” he said.
