Kinabatangan, Lamag polls: EC sets Jan 24 for polling day, Jan 10 for nomination day

PUTRAJAYA: Polling day for the Kinabatangan parliamentary and Lamag state by-elections have been set for Jan 24 next year, says the Election Commission (EC).

EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun on Tuesday (Dec 16) also said that Nomination Day will be on Jan 10, while early voting would be on Jan 20.

The Sabah state and parliamentary seats fell vacant following the death of the incumbent assemblyman and Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin who passed away on Dec 5.

Bung Moktar passed away at a private hospital in Kota Kinabalu - less than a week after being elected as the Lamag state assemblyman for a second term. He was 66.

In the 17th Sabah State Election on Nov 29, Bung Moktar, who was also Sabah Barisan Nasional chairman, defended his Lamag state seat with a majority of 153 votes in a six-cornered fight.

In the national political arena, Bung Moktar began as the Kinabatangan Member of Parliament after winning the seat at the 10th General Election in November 1999, before continuing to serve for six consecutive terms.

Ramlan further said the electoral roll for the by-elections comprises 48,722 voters, including 48,526 ordinary voters and 196 police personnel, reported Bernama.

He added that the budget for the by-elections is RM10mil.
