Hearts United: Sibu to usher in 2026 with community-centred gala

SIBU: The city will usher in the New Year with the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) New Year Countdown 2026, a large-scale public celebration themed "Hearts United", at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang (Phase 1) from 8pm on Dec 31.

Admission is free to the public, and the event aims to bring the community together in a festive and inclusive atmosphere as Sibu welcomes 2026, says the organising chairman.

Councillor Michelle Law Wan Ling also said the countdown reflects SMC’s commitment to fostering unity and community spirit among the people.

"The theme was chosen because we want people from all walks of life to come together, celebrate safely, and welcome the New Year as one community," she told a press conference here on Monday (Dec 15).

"This event reflects our belief in inclusiveness, harmony and the strong bonds that unite our neighbourhoods."

She added that the countdown aligns with SMC’s motto, "Serving People, Enhancing Life", by providing a welcoming platform that strengthens a sense of belonging and shared joy among residents.

The highlight of the night will be a "pyromusical", a fireworks display synchronised to music, which will light up the sky at the stroke of midnight to officially welcome the New Year.

The evening will also feature a variety of high-energy performances, including DJ sets, live band showcases, dance routines and singing acts.

Among the performers are popular local artists Daniel Lee, Ribbon Ooi and Phoebe Chloe, DJ Sapphire, and live bands Candy and Select Band.

Dance crews Elemenz, 8Dios and Little Apple Dance Studio will also take the stage.

Emcees Yann and Fredz will host the programme, guiding the audience through the performances and leading the countdown to midnight.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, 1,000 heart-shaped glow sticks will be distributed randomly to attendees, symbolising warmth, love and unity.

The illuminated crowd is expected to create a striking "sea of hearts", visually representing community connection, Law added.
