Major wind turbine project progressing smoothly in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia’s first-ever utility-scale wind turbine project, set to launch soon in northern Sabah, is progressing as planned, says Sabah Energy Corporation Sdn Bhd (SEC).

SEC group chief executive officer Datuk Adzmir Abd Rahman said the project is among several major initiatives that will shape the state’s energy future.

“Soon, we will embark on another historic milestone –Malaysia’s first utility-scale wind turbine project in northern Sabah. These are not small steps, and your role in informing the public accurately and responsibly cannot be overstated,” Adzmir said during a media appreciation dinner here on Thursday.

He said that with this project and many others in the pipeline, SEC will continue to rely on the media’s cooperation to keep the public informed with clarity and responsibility.

“Over the past year, you have provided balanced coverage of SEC’s major projects, such as the Ulu Padas Hydroelectric Project, which will serve as a key pillar in strengthening Sabah’s renewable energy landscape.”

Adzmir added that SEC remains committed to transparent and constructive engagement with the media as it works to expand renewable energy, strengthen grid resilience and build a more sustainable Sabah.

Adzmir noted that SEC is also a consistent supporter of the annual Kinabalu Press Awards because it believes in recognising excellence.

In July, SEC chairman Datuk Annuar Ayub said that as the state’s primary natural gas supplier the corporation powers 86% of Sabah’s electricity demand, serving residential needs while supporting industrial growth.

Highlighting natural gas as a key enabler of a just energy transition, bridging present needs with long-term sustainability goals, he said revenue from SEC’s gas operations is being reinvested into large-scale renewable energy initiatives.

These include a 15MW solar power plant in Tuaran, a 187.5MW hydroelectric project in Ulu Padas, Tenom, and a pioneering 100MW wind farm in Kudat (Phase 1).

Annuar said the projects represent more than infrastructure expansion as they reflect SEC’s commitment to ensure development brings meaningful environmental and social benefits.
