Father, son perish in Muar house fire


MUAR: An elderly man and his bedridden son tragically died in a fire at their home here on Tuesday (Dec 9).

Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the incident occurred at a bungalow on Lorong Haji Sulaiman, Sungai Abong Darat.

“The fire was reported at about 2.35pm after we received information from the ambulance unit of Hospital Pakar Sultanah Fatimah.

“Upon inspection, the first victim, a 30-year-old man who was bedridden due to a previous road accident, was found deceased at the scene with burn injuries.

“Meanwhile, the second victim, the 75-year-old father of the man, was pronounced dead at the hospital after suffering shortness of breath while attempting to extinguish the flames,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

He said that initial investigations did not find any criminal elements that could be linked to the cause of the fire, adding that the case has been classified as sudden death

“The bodies of both victims have been sent to the hospital’s forensic unit for post-mortem examinations to determine the exact cause of death.

“This case is classified as sudden death,” he said.

ACP Raiz Mukhliz advised anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the nearest police station or reach out directly to investigating officer Asst Supt Suhaimi Ahmad at 013-3975290.

“The police remain committed to ensuring the safety of the community is maintained at the highest level in line with public service aspirations,” he said.
