Satay seller charged with murdering worker, shop owner claims trial to deleting CCTV footage

KUCHING: A satay trader has been charged in a Magistrate’s Court here with killing his Indonesian worker, whose body was found by a roadside last month.

In a separate court, the owner of the shop where the stall is located was charged with destroying evidence of an offence.

Tan Seng Hiang, 35, was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code with murdering the Indonesian worker, only known as Sumarno,  at Jalan Lumba Kuda, Jalan Penrissen Lama here between 1.47am and 2.37am on Nov 25.

No plea was recorded after Tan was charged on Tuesday (Dec 9) as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali fixed Jan 27 for mention.

Lim Hiong Hiap, the owner of the Jalan Sekama premises where Tan operated his stall, was charged in another Magistrate's Court with causing the disappearance of evidence of an offence by instructing one Goh Moh Seng to delete closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage.

Lim, 60, was alleged to have told Goh to erase the footage from a CCTV camera at a premises next to his, at around 1am on Nov 25.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge, framed under Section 201 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum jail sentence of seven years upon conviction.

Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan allowed him bail of RM2,000 with one local surety and fixed Jan 21 for case management. – Bernama
