Enforcement officer at Johor checkpoint nabbed over ‘flying passport’ activity

JOHOR BARU: An enforcement officer at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex (BSI CIQ) has been detained for alleged involvement in the “flying passport” activity.

The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency CIQ BSI commander, Roszita Dim said they also seized eight foreign passports soon after the 32-year-old male suspect was arrested at about 11.30am on Sunday.

Among the passports seized include six Chinese and one each for Indonesia and Vietnam.

Roszita said that the officer was first detained by its integrity unit at the bus entry hall at BSI for having two mobile phones.

“According to regulations, all mobile phones need to be surrendered to the supervisor on duty while working.

“The officer was unable to provide a proper explanation about the two mobile phones and further investigations led them to his motorcycle parked within the BSI compound area where the passports were found,” she added.

Roszita said the suspect has since been remanded for four days and his motorcycle, mobile phones and passports have been seized as part of their investigations.

Investigations were underway under Section 12 (1) (f) of the Passport Act 1966 for possession of the passports.

She reminded her officers to always follow instructions and to maintain integrity when carrying out their duties.

“The department will not compromise with any officers who do not follow instructions or carry out illegal activities,” she added.
