KOTA KINABALU: The passing of Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin has left a deep sense of loss among Sabah leaders, who described the political figure as a key personality who consistently championed the interests of the state and its people.
Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said that although he did not know the leader closely in the early years, their working relationship grew stronger when Bung Moktar served as Deputy Chief Minister in the previous administration.
Joachim, who is also acting president of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), said Bung Moktar was a leader with a strong commitment to Sabah’s development and was outspoken on issues affecting the state.
"He wanted to do something for the state. Sometimes we plan, but ultimately God knows best. So, rest in peace, my friend.
"He tried his best to determine what was best for Sabah. He was indeed vocal on Sabah issues. In that sense, we really respected him,” he said after paying his final respects at the Kota Kinabalu City Mosque here on Friday (Dec 5).
Meanwhile, Sabah Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif described Bung Moktar as a steadfast fighter who left a profound mark on Sabah’s political landscape.
"We have lost a shining star in Sabah’s struggle. He was a distinguished leader and a mentor to many of us. May Allah bless his soul and all the good deeds he has contributed,” he said.
State Assistant Minister of Works and Utilities Datuk Limus Jury said Bung Moktar consistently showed strong commitment to development and the well-being of the people.
"He was a good, generous man who helped the people on the ground, and he was also highly experienced in Sabah politics,” he said.
Kuamut assemblyman Datuk Masiung Banah said Bung Moktar played an important role in the development of Kinabatangan, especially in key infrastructure projects.
He said their cooperation had always been smooth, particularly in matters requiring coordination between state and federal agencies.
"Kuamut is one of the constituencies in the Kinabatangan parliamentary area. As we all know, he was an MP of calibre and vocal in raising the people’s issues, especially in Kinabatangan. It cannot be denied that he contributed greatly throughout his service as an MP. He brought a lot of development to Kinabatangan.
"For example, major infrastructure such as roads, electricity, water supply and others that involve high costs. I even called him ‘my brother’,” he said.
Bung Moktar, 66, who was also a former deputy chief minister, died at a private hospital here at 1.46am on Friday.
His remains were taken to the family home in Luyang before funeral prayers were performed at the Kota Kinabalu City Mosque, followed by burial at the Kampung Likas Islamic Cemetery after Friday prayers.
