Shamsul Anuar tables motion to suspend Takiyuddin from Parliament for six months

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah (pic) has tabled a motion for the six-month suspension of Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan from the Dewan Rakyat for allegedly linking the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency’s (MMEA) exercise to the Memali incident.

Before tabling the motion on Thursday (Dec 4), Shamsul said he is tabling the motion to defend the image of the MMEA.

The House will decide on whether the Opposition chief whip should be suspended for his comments during the Oct 22 debates on the Supply Bill 2026.

In the motion, Shamsul said Takiyuddin (PN-Kota Baru) had spoken about an incident involving the MMEA at Masjid Rusila, Marang, Kuala Terengganu.

In his speech, Takiyuddin allegedly linked the incident to the 1985 Memali Incident, which the motion described as an attempt to instil fear among the public and cast a negative light on the image and reputation of MMEA personnel within the public service.

This was despite the Home Ministry claiming that police had given clarifications on Oct 6 and Oct 13 that the episode was a training exercise conducted by MMEA’s STAR Team.

The Memali incident occurred in Baling, Kedah, after police attempted to arrest Ustaz Ibrahim Mahmud, a.k.a. Ibrahim Libya, under the Internal Security Act.

Villagers in Kampung Memali, who revered the religious teacher, had vowed to protect him from being arrested.

The incident left 14 villagers and four policemen dead.

Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has allowed four MPs to debate the motion.
