HOME Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail is expected to table a motion seeking a six-month suspension of Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan from the Dewan Rakyat for allegedly linking a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency’s (MMEA) operation to the Memali incident.
The motion was listed as one of the House’s order of business.
The minister will ask the House to decide whether the Opposition chief whip should be suspended for his comments during the Oct 22 debates on Budget 2026.
In the motion, Saifuddin Nasution said Takiyuddin (PN-Kota Baru) had spoken about an incident involving MMEA officers at Masjid Rusila, Marang, Kuala Terengganu.
He said Takiyuddin had allegedly linked it to the 1985 Memali incident.
He said Takiyuddin’s remarks had instilled fear among the public and cast a negative light on MMEA personnel.
This was despite the police’s clarifications on Oct 6 and Oct 13 that the incident at Masjid Rusila was actually a training exercise conducted by MMEA’s STAR Team.
“Kota Baru had made statements and allegations of a serious nature and has acted in a manner that incites sentiments against the authority of the government,” read the motion.
However, it was not clear whether the motion would be tabled or debated, as it is at the Speaker’s discretion. Sources said it may take place today, which is also the last day of the Dewan Rakyat meeting for this year.
The Memali incident occurred in Baling, Kedah, after police attempted to arrest preacher Ibrahim Mahmud, or Ibrahim Libya, under the Internal Security Act.
Villagers in Kg Memali, who revered the religious teacher, had vowed to protect him from being arrested.
The incident left 14 villagers and four policemen dead.
At a press conference at the Parliament lobby yesterday, Takiyuddin questioned the legality and motive of the move to suspend him from the Dewan Rakyat for six months.
This move, he said, is an attempt to silence parliamentary scrutiny of the government’s standard operating procedures.
“Why was I not brought first to the Rights and Privileges Committee, which is the proper forum?” he asked.
Instead, he said the government decided to proceed to seek a motion under Standing Order 27(3), which allows government business to be tabled without notice.
“It’s clear the government’s intention is to suspend me. Why deny me my rights in the rights and privileges committee?” said Takiyuddin.
