Despite their advanced years, these energetic women keep it moving
IPOH: Even at 79, a former secondary school teacher continues to enlighten others – but this time it’s all about enjoying life.
Linda Oon teaches line dancing to seniors with the same unwavering energy and passion she once nurtured back in the day within the classroom.
Retirement at 55 hardly dampened her spirit.
Instead, it marked the beginning of an entirely new chapter filled with music and movement, which led a growing community of friends who gather to learn, laugh and dance together.
“My sister was the one who loved dancing. She practised at home while I was busy with schoolwork.
“After I retired, I watched her and her friends and thought, why not, I have nothing to do, and so I joined in,” she said in an interview at the hall of the Church of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Ipoh, where the dancing classes are held.
Oon, who celebrated her birthday yesterday, said what started as a casual pastime turned into a full-time commitment when she adapted quickly to the dance.

When the group eventually ran short of instructors, she was the obvious choice to step in.
“I told them I was still new, but that I will give it my best shot,” she added.
Today, Oon handles nearly 80 dancers across several classes –including a beginner session – for a minimal fee.
She also teaches twice a week at a senior citizens’ club in Bercham which has about 500 members – some in their 80s.
Besides improving her health and strengthening her legs, she said the activity also brought cheer to her students.
“When retired, many of us stay at home and do not meet people. Here, we make friends and laugh and dance together. It’s so much fun!” said Oon, who has classes daily except on Saturdays.
One of her most dedicated students is 88-year-old Jenny Yip Moh Ching, who rarely misses a session.
Yip, a retired Chinese school teacher, said she started learning to line dance over 20 years ago.
“This activity also helped with my emotional well-being. It’s good for the mind and body and I will continue for as long as I can,” she added.
Jennifer Lee, 80, said she enjoyed the classes very much.
“I made many new friends. After classes we go out for lunch and also have gatherings on our birthdays,” she said.
Evelyn Toh, 75, said she started dancing before her retirement from a private hospital.
“I love ballroom dancing as well. It is great to dance and be happy.
“Age is definitely no barrier to being involved in something exciting,” she added.
