Myanmar woman allegedly steals cash, clothing from Good Samaritan who gave her shelter

AMPANG: A female Myanmar national was detained for allegedly stealing a mobile phone, cash and personal belongings from a house in Taman Permai Jaya last week.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Khairul Anuar Khalid said the case was reported by a 29-year-old local woman, who discovered the items missing after being informed by her daughter at about 1.40pm on Nov 28.

"The victim had known the suspect for about three months and had allowed the woman to stay temporarily at her home as she had no place to live.

"The theft allegedly took place while the victim was away. The suspect is believed to have entered the master bedroom and fled with a mobile phone, a suitcase containing clothing, and RM4,500 in cash," he said in a statement on Thursday (Dec 4).

Following investigations, a police team from the Ampang Jaya Criminal Investigation Division arrested the suspect at Taman Nirwana at about 11.30pm on Dec 1, he said.

"We also seized several items, including a mobile phone, clothing and a suitcase, believed to be connected to the case," he added.

The suspect has been remanded for four days until Friday (Dec 5) to assist in investigations, he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft in a dwelling, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years, a fine, or both upon conviction.
