‘I feared for my life’, says Tei of MACC arrest

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Albert Tei says he feared for his life and has accused Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission officers of pointing a gun at him during his arrest last Friday (Nov 28).

“It felt like I was going to be shot if not for the presence of my family,” the businessman Albert Tei claimed, adding that the officers did not show any identification.

“It was terrifying… a gun was immediately pointed at my head by the masked officers as they demanded I open the door,” he told a press conference outside the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex on Thursday (Dec 4).

“Throughout the entire time, they claimed to be from MACC but never provided any identification or warrant.

“I honestly believed they would shoot me as I could see it in the officer’s eyes, but it was only when my 13-year-old son appeared behind me in a terrified state that they seemed to relax,” he said.

He claimed that the officers used excessive force, which made him fear for the safety of both him and his family.

“They kicked down my door and pointed their guns at my head as they bound my hands with cable ties, as they rounded up the rest of my family in the living room, all because I had apparently violated a notice from MACC.

“What was my crime? I wasn’t selling drugs. I had not robbed a bank nor was I a terrorist. Yet they pointed guns at my head,” Tei said.

He also accused the officers of going too far by ordering his wife to delete any footage she had recorded of the raid on her phone while also confiscating the CCTV footage of the house.

“If I had just violated a notice, why did they need to go so far as to delete or confiscate any recording of the raid?

“I want to state firmly: if the confiscated CCTV recording is damaged or any footage is deleted, I will take action against MACC to the end,” he added.

Tei, 37, claimed trial at the Sessions Court here on Thursday to four counts of graft involving more than RM176,000, where he allegedly bribed Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, who is the former senior political secretary to the Prime Minister.
