Cops identify 874 flood-prone areas in Johor ahead of Northeast monsoon

JOHOR BARU: Police have identified 874 flood-prone locations across Johor as part of early preparations for the Northeast monsoon, which is expected to bring heavy rain until January 2026.

State police chief Comm Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said a total of 1,280 officers and personnel are currently on standby, supported by more than 900 assets that can be mobilised at any time if flooding occurs.

He added that all departments under the Johor police contingent have strengthened their preparedness, especially in hotspot areas likely to be affected.

"Johor is among the states that may be impacted by the monsoon. As such, we have taken the initiative to increase manpower and upgrade logistics to ensure rescue operations can be activated swiftly.

"If the situation becomes more critical, we will further increase manpower from the pool of more than 9,000 officers and personnel in the state police force who can be deployed as needed.

"We have sufficient assets, but we will also seek support from partner agencies such as the Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Force, Health Ministry, Social Welfare Department and Rela should the flood situation worsen," he said.

Comm Ab Rahaman made these remarks during a press conference after attending the state police’s monthly assembly at the Johor police headquarters on Wednesday (Dec 3).

On leave arrangements, he said Johor police have no plans to freeze leave for now, but only 20% of officers and personnel are allowed to be on leave at any given time.

"This measure depends on the current situation. If the floods worsen, we will review the possibility of enforcing a leave freeze," he added.
