Pahang SPM student seen swimming through flood to sit for SPM is safe, says state ed dept

PETALING JAYA: The Pahang State Education Department (JPN Pahang) confirmed that the student seen swimming through floodwaters on social media to sit for the 2025 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination is safe.

In a statement on Tuesday (Dec 2), the department said the incident occurred Saturday (Nov 29), when floodwaters rapidly submerged the route from the student’s home, forcing him to wade through the water before being able to reach the school hostel.

"The student is now safely accommodated at the SMK Kuala Lanar hostel and is ready to sit for SPM alongside other candidates.

"The state education department, in collaboration with the District Education Office (PPD) and boarding secondary schools in the Lipis district, has implemented contingency plans by identifying the number of students living in flood-risk areas and provided hostel facilities to all students in that area, even if they do not live in a hostel.

"This measure was taken to ensure that all candidates could sit for the SPM examinations without difficulty," it said.

It also said that the PPD and schools are continuously monitoring and ensuring that the needs and safety of all candidates are prioritised during the monsoon season, allowing examinations to proceed smoothly.

"The state education department expresses its highest appreciation to the schools, the PPD, security teams, and all parties involved in ensuring that the SPM examinations proceed smoothly and without disruption, prioritising the best interests of the candidates," the statement read.
