Man nabbed after fake bomb found in Sitiawan convenience store

IPOH: A man has been arrested after an object resembling an explosive device was found at a 24-hour convenience store in Manjung Point, Sitiawan.

The object later turned out to be a dud, police said.

Manjung OCPD Asst Comm Hasbullah Abd Rahman said a distress call was received at 10.30pm on Monday (Dec 1) about an object resembling a bomb.

"The object was first noticed by a store employee, who saw it on a food rack," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Dec 2).

He said that the district Bomb Disposal Unit went to the scene and confirmed that the object was non-functional, as it contained no explosive material and had incomplete wiring.

A man spotted in front of the premises was then arrested on suspicion of planting the fake bomb, he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.

He advised the public not to misuse technology to create any form of threat that could cause public anxiety or disturb public order.

"Firm action without compromise will be taken against any security threat, especially those involving public safety," he said.
