Sabah polls: Young or old, Tamparuli voters share one wish

TAMPARULI: From young voters to grandparents who have seen multiple elections, they want the same thing – a representative who is sincere and focused on the rakyat.

Stepping into the polling booth for the second time here on Saturday (Nov 29), Healcy Andy Albert Jaikul said it was still a daunting experience.

"We don’t do this often, so I'm quite nervous going through it. It’s a big responsibility," said the 23-year-old, who came to the SJKC Chung Hwa polling centre with her grandmother, Helen Lo.

Lo, 62, said she hopes the incoming candidate will work hard for the people.

"Let’s see some development. It shouldn’t be someone who only cares about (themselves)," she said.

For first-time voter Nur Wandha Waryzea, 19, the elected representative must be someone with good character.

"Fulfil your duties to the rakyat and help uplift our community," she said.

Meanwhile, Rosie Chee, 66, and Timi Ansunal, 64, said casting their votes early frees up the rest of their day.

"We came early to avoid bad weather later in the day. Voting early also allows us to run our errands without any worries since we’ve already done our duty."

They arrived about half an hour before the centre opened at 7.30am and were among the first in line.

Sabah is holding its 17th state election today to elect 73 members of the legislative assembly.
